The Most Beautiful Wedding Invitations in the World

This my friends, is a love story.

A story of the truest, most beautiful, life long love there ever was.

I’m talking about Mr. Gaunt my Wedding Invitations…Le Sigh.

There are little girls that dream of the perfect dress, the perfect man, the perfect cake. For me it was ALWAYS about the invitation. So let me take you back, way back, to tell the tale of our sweet sweet romance.

It all started when I crawled out of the womb and declared upon the world

“I, MORGAN MELIM WILL NOT ALLOW A SINGLE POSTER, PRESENTATION, SCRAPBOOK, CARD OR OTHER PAPER ARTFORM BE TACKY OR WITHOUT GREATNESS!”

I’m not lying folks, that really happened.

And so throughout my 13 years in the public school system, I disguised my sheer lack of grammar, spelling (shush you! Dont act like you don’t notice!) math skills, geography skills, or any other REAL intelligence with the most ass-kicking visual aids you have EVER seen! I tell no lies!

Whats that? You need to design a flag for a made up country? DONE!

You need to make a pretty cover for your book report? DONE!

You need a whole yearbook designed? DONE!

And so on. I actually blame the public school systems for being so easily fooled by my visual talent that here I sit today, not being able to spell or locate any of the countries we may or may not be at war with as I type. It’s fine, I listen to NPR.

So there you have it, Kindergarten through 12th grade wrapped up in 1/2 a blog post.

Moving on. My first REAL-ish job was during my senior year in highschool when I worked for 9 months at The Paper Zone! Which for those of you who are not blessed to live in the Pacific Northwest, is an awesome paper/craft/scrapbook supply store. Also the discount was amazing. I’m pretty sure though, while working there I was told more than once that I had to re direct my attention from making “Example Displays” to actually talking to customers…huh? No thanks.

Since then I have excelled at any job that has allowed me to be creative (kitchen designing, painting, home decor) and FAILED at all jobs involving customer service, math, money, and boredom. Why wont someone pay me to make dioramas all day!?

So now that you have my history, lets narrow this down to my wedding invitations. I always knew they had to be AMAZING, well at least by my standards. There were so many cool ideas that I found out there, but in the end there were 3 big things we had to take into consideration.

1. Cost of Materials. This eliminated anything in this family

2. Cost to Ship. I had wanted to do posters, but I couldn’t afford the tubes and postage.

3. Could we easily DIY 100 of them?

Which brings us to the design we created. I actually got the idea last Valentines day when I bought this adorable book for Mr. Gaunt.

Rob Ryan is an AMAZING artist, who works manly in the art of “Paper Cutting” or the more technical term Scherenschnitte. There is also a local artist name Nikki McClure who’s work you may have seen around, she also inspired our invitation, as all of her art is also done by paper cutting.

So I told Mr. Gaunt about this idea of mine (originally to do a poster in this medium) and told him to design something. Although I am very creative and very good at pulling together a look, actual “fine art” is not my style. In the month that I was in Washington and he was in Colorado I gave him the task of designing an image to cut out.

In the end he did the whole design all by himself, including cutting it out. And then I added the heart and all the wording. It was  a joint effort. In the image the basis is him and I and Hula walking down a path. The left side (his side) is all Colorado themed, with the Rockies, the bear and the mountain feel. The right side (my side) is all Washington with the ocean, the San Juan Islands, a Madrona Tree and a Whale.

FACTS ON THE CUT OUT:

-It was done on white 80lb paper 8.5″ x 11″

-Cut with an Exacto Blade and Nail scissors

-The first draft was done on a brown paper bag, this was draft #2.

After the cut out was done we realized we would have to make it smaller, a 5″ x 8″ instead of 8.5″ x 11″. I also wanted to figure out how to make it sharper, without losing the look of a cut-out. This was hard. I originally took pictures (see above) of the cut out on wood, but then when I imported it in to Photoshop, I quickly realized the background had to go if I wanted to clean it up. So I smoothed and edited the image and then realized that I still wanted the background, so I brought it back, only better. I ended up finding a large image of “Woodgrain” and layered it in the back. It doesn’t look 100% 3D, but it’s not too bad.

After that we went to the Paper Zone and picked out a grey and “Mustard” color cardstock to have printed. I designed the backside in Photoshop, and made files to have the front and back printed. I’d like to note that I bought a few different sheets of white (glossy, mat, thick, thin) and did a test print to see which showed the wood grain best, it really make a difference. We also used the same font that we had downloaded for our Save the Dates. I also  really encourage people to use an interesting font.

I mentioned about having our invites all printed and cut at kinkos in this post. Then we made a little production line and put these bad boys together!

The whole thing cost us about $60 to make all of them, awesome! We also have plans to frame the original cut out, because I love it! And I know they are funky and not as traditional and elegant as some might like, but they are PERFECT for us! I really couldn’t be happier!

Berries and Blues

Its been a rough few days. I absolutely let what others think of me, make me doubt myself. I wouldn’t even say I’m over it. There sometimes feels like an over whelming amount of thing that I need to change about myself, that I don’t even know where to begin. I feel a bit like a loser.

I applied for a fulltime position at my job (a position that I was already doing, and was very much qualified for) but I didn’t get it. I got a stupid letter saying they chose another qualified candidate. It reminded me of Cheer tryouts in 9th grade, getting the letter that just says NOPE, and then letting your brain run wild with all the reasons why you suck. Too fat, too ugly, too opinionated, not happy enough, not smart enough, not unique or interesting….” I suppose I could ask my employer why it is exactly I didn’t get the job, but I feel it would only make things worse to have her confirm what I already know. I’m trying to quickly focus my energy on what my next step is. My job will probably end in the next 3-4 weeks, and I will need to decided what that means for me. I also like to tell myself things like “You don’t want a sit down job anyways” which is true. Sitting in a chair for 10 hours a day 6 days a week has totally made me gain 5 pounds. That’s an uphill battle I don’t think I want to fight. If you sit down for 40+ hours a week you have to eat PERFECT and work out HARD just to maintain your weight! GAH! I do not want to maintain my weight, I want to kick my weight to the curb!

This week we go back to 40 hours a week, so I will get off at 11pm! This is awesome, as now I can bring back my weight lifting in the evenings. When I got off at 1am there was no way in hell I could keep doing that. Now things can be more sane. I can eat healthier and it will all be better. Well I suppose the financial bit wont be better, but whatever.

Speak of financial. We let my brother move in with us at the beginning of Jully. He needed a cheap place to stay and we needed the extra money. He paid us one lump sum to stay here through the end of September. We will use this money to pay off all of our wedding vendors. This is a HUGE deal! I feel really fortunate that all of that will be taken care of.

We also scored MAJOR yesterday at Kinkos with our wedding invitations. For 2 weeks we had been trying to find a time to go get our invitation printed and cut with this one awesome guy who works there. However for many reasons we kept missing him. On Thursday afternoon we went in one more time and he was there, but super busy. He told us to come in really early on Friday morning and that he would have time to work one on one with us.

For our invitations we needed:

-40 full color prints (2 up)

-40 black and white prints (2 up)

-100 sheets cut to size.

When we had originally gone around to get price quotes Kinkos estimated that with the paper and the printing and cutting we were looking at $120. BUT he told us it would be about 1/2 that if we bought our own paper. I think I mentioned before that we ended up buying our paper on Sale at the paper zone about a month ago. For our design I had made digital files and measurements and put them on a USB drive to have printed. So Mr. Gaunt and I got up at 7:30 am yesterday and worked with “Cool Kinkos Man” for about an hour. Shockingly all of my files and sizes were perfect and the process was totally painless. Then the Kinkos guy ended up having to leave in an emergency (his wife ran out of gas in the middle of an intersection!) as he was leaving he told his coworker what to charge and said “I’ll throw in the cuts as a wedding gift” So his co worker rings us up and Mr.Gaunt hands him the coupon we had for 10% off. The guy looks at us and goes “I can’t use this, you didn’t reach the minimum, your total is $3.72″….uhhh….seriously? that’s right, we got all of invites printed and cut for $3.72! Amazing, I know.

I have to work my last Saturday today, then I get me weekends back! I’m going to try to have a good day today and to keep positive! Tomorrow I need to make something yummy with all our Raspberries that are ready!

Not Today

I didn’t workout this morning. Mr. Gaunt and I had errands to run and it just didn’t fit in, which I guess sometimes is ok. Although I really felt kind crappy about it all day. I still have Wednesdays Workout to do this evening, then tomorrow it’s back to the routine!

Today however we did finish the final design on our wedding invitation, we even made a full mockup! This is so very exciting! Now we just have to wait until I start working more (hopefully 10 hour days 6 days a week soon!) so we can actually move forward on things. We have dried up all the extra funds, so all wedding plans are on hold now. Which is fine, I can focus on working out and just working in general.

I’m very nervous about weigh in on Friday. Its gonna be a strict day tomorrow, maybe an extra long workout.

An Evening of Invitaitons

I’m spending my Tuesday evening trying to figure out how to actually put together our wedding invitation. We are done designing it, but is rather large (8.5 x 11) so I’m trying to decide if I want to shrink it so it fits in an envelope, or keep it big and fold it? If I had no budget we would have it printed 11 x 17 and mailed in poster tubes, but that would cost us too much money. However my stupid printers/scanner/faxer is being super lame (like always), so we will se how much gets done.

This week I start on extend hours at work, then next week I move to a slightly later shift, then the week of the 6th I go full time in the evenings. I cant wait to start racking up the overtime. Buh bye Saturdays, I got money to make! I also applied for a promotion, we will see.

I walked 2.6 miles with Manda this evening, despite being tired. I’m also waiting until my dinner settles and then I’m going to give Tuesdays (see previous post) workout a go. Fingers crossed I can lose another pound this week! Doing so good!

I feel like not only is working out and eating less making me feel way better about my body, but I also just feel more productive and healthier. I’m kinda diggin it. I even feel like it’s helping me manage wedding stress, because so far I still just feel really excited and not that freaked out. Sure the money thing can be tight, but everyone is being so nice and helpful it’s really kind of awesome, I feel really lucky.

I feel bad for anyone who has to talk to me for the next few months though, because I pretty much have wedding on the brain all the time. Mr. Gaunt asked me yesterday what I was going to spend my time thinking about once the wedding is over…DUH…BABIES! Seriously though, I apologize now for how one track mind/boring I am.

In other super fun wedding news I have started collecting a bunch of hair styles and am going to go in and have my awesome hairstylist of a sister do some practice runs. We are even going to order some extensions…yay!

Poster Invitations

First off I want to say how humbled I am by all the amazingly sweet comments on here (and facebook) for my last post. I’m feeling  a little better today, after hitting an all time low mid-week, crying for an hour over the weather. I also got my period yesterday, and apparently my PMSing was at an all time extreme! None the less I have talked to Mr. Gaunt about it, and for a number of reasons I have decided on Monday to re join Weight Watchers. I’ll post more on this, this weekend. But again THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for being such great friends!

Ok onto a bit of positive wedding news! I have decided after much debating (in my own head) that I will be doing a poster invitation, that I plan (with Mr. Gaunt’s help) to design myself! I’m not sure whether I’ll do digital or illustrated, or both maybe! I think this will save us some money and still give us a bit of creative expression. I’m a BIG fan of GigPosters and Mr. Gaunt and I have quite the collection of them, I like the idea of making our own. We can even frame it after the wedding, and I hope it will be cool enough that our friends and family might want to do the same. I’m going to have to look into mailing small poster tubes, and hopefully that wont be too crazy expensive. None the less here are some great examples of what I’m thinking:

And last but not least:

-I lost my phone (so call mr.gaunt if you need me):

-I start my 2nd job on Sunday.

-Ill be making Pumpkin Whoopie Pies for a harvest Party Tomorrow!
