Door to Door Organics!

So I’m not sure if I have mentioned it on here, but I really wanted to do a CSA box this summer (in case you don’t want to click that link, a CSA box is when you pay around $400 in early spring to a local farm and you get a delivery every week of their produce) but I had a lot of questions and concerns about the quantity and variety of my food. We were going to split on with Ms. G, and we still may but until then I found something pretty darn sweet.

Its called Door to Door Organics and they are based out of Colorado, Kansas City, Michigan, and some smaller states on the east coast. Basically what you do is purchase a WEEKLY or BI-WEEKLY produce box and you get a mix of organic local produce (whatever’s in season) and some imported stuff (whatever’s not in season). The best part is you only pay AFTER you get your box of goods, and they send you an email the week before spelling out exactly what you will get in your box. They also have an option to substitute out items, add more items (like Artichokes were $1.85 this week extra) and make a list of I LOVE and I DONT LOVE so they customize it for you.

I’m getting the Bitty-Box ($22.66), and my first box will be delivered to my house on Wednesday, and it will include the following:

1 lb Zucchini
1 lb Yams
1 ea. Sweet Baby Broccoli
1 ea. Red Leaf Lettuce
1 ea. Carrots with Tops
2 ea. Kiwi
2 ea. Fuji Apples
3 ea. Blood Oranges
2 ea. Bartlett Pears
1 ea. Avocado

I love that you get just one or two of each item. This will definitely reduce waste in our house. We can also at any time increase the size of our order. It’s all very user friendly, where the CSA box wasn’t so much.

We are trying to cut our grocery bill back to $65 a week, I buy a fair amount of organic food as well as some other pricey items (fresh fruit, nuts) but our bill was a little through the roof. So I’ve decided to give you all a SUNDAY SHOPPING update to break down what I bought and what I spent. Im also really going to try to shop bargains while staying healthy.  Also meal planning is really going to be a must. This is going to be a challenge!

Sunday Groceries

Groceries upon groceries were purchased today. We tried out Sprouts and my overall opinion is that its EXACTLY like Sunflower Market, only its 20 minutes form my house unlike SFM which is 5 minutes. Lots of yummy favorites for making soups and stir fry and salads. Lots of veggies, lots of fruit. Some new things too! Just some pictures of what we got (many new recipes will be posted this week, I promise):

Babies, Dresses, Cake…Oh My!

Just wanted to share some pics from my weekend. Friday night Mr. Gaunt and paid bills and organized our finances, then we went down to the Castle ROck outlet mall to hunt for some long sleeve shirts. We made a little stop at Banana Republic Outlet where I tried on some of their clearance summer dresses. It was kind of exciting because I kind of wear a smaller size now (please note slight tummy bulge that would prevent me from actually buying any of these dresses) Im really excited for the next 20lbs to come off!

Yesterday Pro and I went to a friends baby shower (yes we are at that age where EVERYONE is getting married and having babies) which was fun, I made a little rain mobile and we got to color and baby onesies and eat yummy Pumpkin spice cake that Pro made! A good time had by all!

Today Mr. Gaunt and I are gonna do some cleaning and then look through some cook books and then go grocery shopping. Im excited because were gonna hit up Sprouts which is kind of a discount organic food store that suppose to be amazing! Ill let you know how it goes. Oh and I leave you with pics of my baby mobile:

Grocery Shopping Love

In case you havent noticed a good 25% of this blog is about cooking and food, especially healthy food. I have really found pleasure this past summer in cooking meals and learning new recipes, or modifying recipes to make them Weight Loss friendly. Grocery shopping is in my top 5 favorite things to do in my spare time also so that helps with the whole cooking thing, I know a lot of people dread grocery shopping, but I love it!

Anyways the last few weeks my cooking has dwindled a bit because I am DIRT POOR! With my whole job thing being delayed 2 weeks and bills galore grocery shopping has been put on the back burner to make room for tuna sandwiches and whatever else I can scrape together with my cupboard remnants…ugg. We get paid on friday so hopefully I can stock up this weekend with good stuff. I actually decided to make a list of stuff to get based on a few recipes I want to make:

-Potatoes (10 Smaller Yellow ones)

-Onion (2 Larger ones)

-Vegetable Broth

-Milk & Light Soy Milk

-Tomatoes (2)

-Avacodo (2)

-Cilantro

-Fat Free Half and Half (yes its a real thing)

This is going to be what I need to make a ton of soups! YUM! Also it’s a lot of basic ingredients I need for other things. Making lists helps me a lot! Im hoping to have at least 4 new recipe post for next week. Tonight Im going to try to whip up some easy meals for us to take to work this week so we dont have to eat out. Im also on the hunt for some good healthy cooking blogs. It seems the healthy ones often dont have pictures, and the ones that do have pictures arent really health based (and yes by health based I do mean lower calorie).
