Our Kitchen

I finally got around to photographing the rest of the house, so I’m going to try to post all the rooms this weekend.

I had previously posted our bedroom, and now its time for the Kitchen!

We actually got really lucky and didn’t have to d a whole lot to the kitchen. The whole kitchen and cabinets are all white, which I may have changed if I had been really motivated, but in the end I’m pleased with how bright and white it is. The floor is the exception though. The white linoleum (that I had previously cleaned) is such a pain in the ass. Anytime anyone walks across it I have to mop. I’m not even lying when I say I probably mop the floor 3-4 times A DAY and it still looks kinda crappy. If we at any point had an extra couple hundred dollars laying around I would put in a darker laminate. Until then, I’ll just mop a lot.

I had also redone the inside of the cabinets and drawers (posted here ) other than that it was just a matter of putting things away and decorating a little. I would say there is a very slight “neon” theme in this room. I have lots of Neon orange, green and yellow scattered around the room. The big bakers rack we actually found on clearance (for $15 regularly $65) at The Home Depot a few months ago, and had never taken out of the box. I had really hoped to have a kitchen or a laundry room that it would fit in, and we did! originally the fridge was suppose to live where the bakers rack is, but it took up way too much room, so it lives around the corner in the mud room.

Other than that we replaced the kitchen faucet, and I bought some new trash cans and recycling bins (from Ikea) and a cute grey rug (also Ikea) and the was that. Its one of my favorite rooms in the house.

Despite the fact that this kitchen might be smaller than our other kitchen, it actually has so much more storage space because the cabinets ar so large, plus little cabinets on top to store small appliances I don’t use very often. I actually have a lot of empty cabinets and 1 empty drawer. Its awesome!

You can get your own glass heart from Gaia Glass. I love the lime green color of this!

Spare Bedroom, and why mauve is not cute.

I just finished painting (and photographing) the spare bedroom, which for a TEENY TINY room, took FOR-EV-VER (Sand Lot anyone?).

It all started one day when we were at Home Depot, and their “GREEN” Paint was on clearance for $5 a gallon, apparently no one really wanted eco-friendly paint. However it only came in a select number of colors. There was a lot of pressure to pick a color for the spare room fast, so I went a little crazy and picked Mauve. But not a cute purple Mauve, more like un ugly grandma Brown Pink mauve. I don’t know why, I just did. I don’t pick colors under pressure well.

The bedroom previously was BRIGHT Robin Blue with dark brown (almost olive-y black) trim. Once the mauve went up I immediately hated it. My mom and sister kept saying “When the blue is all gone it will look better” and “when the trim is all white it will look better” well, after almost completing the job we realized…nope…its never gonna look good.

This is not the first time I have painted an entire room only to hate it and re-paint it. In our old house I painted our bedroom Navy after seeing a picture like this however mine room didn’t really look like that, it looked like a dark blue cave. I had a god cry and then Mr. Gaunt convinced me to just suck it up and re paint it, which I did.

So that’s pretty much what went down here too. I scrapped the Mauve and bought a nice gallon of OOPS (a miss-tint that is discounted to $6) Paint at a local paint store. Only problem is that it’s a flat finish which is not my favorite, but its a spare room so I’m not that concerned. In the end I couldn’t be more thrilled with this decision, it looks sooooo much better.

The stripes came at the end, when I got hair up my butt and decided I needed a little pizzaz! Id like to say I measured and spent hours taping off, but that’s just not true. I did tape off, but I eyeballed it, no measuring at all. Shockingly they look pretty even, yay good eyesight!

NOTE: In the “Before” pictures, it looks like a blue/grey wall color, but its way brighter. The most accurate representation of the color is the one of my sister on her knees painting over the bright blue.

As you can see, this was quite the process. I should have primed the trim as well, as it took about a million coats of white to cover the brown. The whole thing was very frustration, so I did it slowly when I had the time. It took me about 3 weeks to finish…lol! It’s going to be a very cute Guest Room/Office/Craft Room.

Nice bedding is one thing we really want for our wedding. Only problem is the bedding I want is from West Elm, and you cant register there. Oh well, we may just buy it after the wedding ourselves. For your viewing pleasure….(click on photo)

Although the DwellStudio Ash Draper Striped Bedding would also do nicely. (click on photo)

Im also SOLD on this rug from Ikea. Its the only thing I can find that is close to the Madeline Weinrib Rug in my budget. (click on photo)

And Lastly I am very excited to do some of these “small space” designs in our new place. As well as build a storage device for our paintings/canvas that can also be used as a table or something…a fun project to take on.

That’s it for the night. I have a horrible stomach bug so I will not be going to work tomorrow….boo…I even got the flu shot. Maybe its food poisoning.

Tree and Cookies

I wont lie, the day has been less than perfect. Just a number of dumb things, and both of us being in crappy moods. We had made plans earlier this week to get our tree tonight and go see a movie, the movie didnt happen but the tree did. As a kid growing up in Washington and having multiple Christmas Tree farms within 5 minutes of our house we always went and cut out own. I remember they would always have the blue tin cookies and hot apple cider. Tonight we just went to The Home Depot to get our tree, but I insisted we stop and get both cookies and cider! Of course in real life they are not “blue tin cookies” they are Danish Butter Cookies, and yeah Im sure they are AWFUL for you…yum!

Mr. Gaunt picked a movie to watch while we decorated the tree.

Hula is ready for her first Christmas!
