WRITTEN JULY 2009:
Ok I put off writing this cause I’m just not sure what to say. I guess Ill start from the beginning:
My name is Morgan Melim, I’m 24 and I grew up in Bellingham Washington with my mom, my brother Forrest (26), and sister Taylor (19). I guess I would say I have been kind of chubby my whole life, maybe not when I was five, but definitely from about 10 on. In high school I probably watched/obsessed about my weight more and was probably a good 50lbs lighter than I am today (not to say I was super thin or anything. Id say after high school when I moved in with my first boyfriend that my weight went up (damn those boyfriends always taking you out to eat!) and then in 2006 when I moved to Boulder Colorado I dropped a good 30lbs (working at home depot and being too poor to eat much) but then of course I got a new boyfriend and my weight went up again, to my highest about 3 months ago.
On May 4th 2009 I joined Weight Watchers with my boyfriend Mr. Gaunt and my good friend Pro. So far Ive been losing an average of 2.1lbs per week. Im hoping to continue to shed the weight with healthy eating and portion control. Id love to get to a size 10/12 but would even be happy at a 14. For my height my weight range is 137-160…160 sounds amazing! Ha! Anyways Id love to reach that in 12-18 months.
Mr. Gaunt is 28 (29 November 28th) was born and raised in Colorado and started WW to make me happy (= Ha! His starting weight was around 310 (he is 6’4″) and his goal weight is 225-250. Together we are making this happen one day at a time.
I will also probably be blogging about some of my other interest: Cooking, Photography, Craft projects, working on my home, my cat Hula Bean, vacations, friends, clothing, parties, holidays…the list goes on.
Feel free to leave comments, Id love to know who my readers are!
xoxo
Morgan
UPDATE OCTOBER 2009:
I am now down 50lbs and am about the size I was in High School. I feel ok with how I look, but would still like to loose another 50-75 pounds. While I do still go to Weight Watcher meetings I do not follow the plan as religiously. WW is based on a points system where you get x amount of points per week. I found that I was consuming a lot of diet foods and artificial products and this worried me. In August I went vegetarian (almost vegan as I wasnt doing cheese) for about a month, but have since introduced some cheese and chicken and eggs back into my diet because I wasnt getting enough protein. I focus mostly on Clean Eating (organic, healthy natural, whole Grains, lots of vegetables) as opposed to actual points counting. I continue to carefully monitor my portions and am learning more and more about how food affects my body. I have a current goal set for January 1st 2010 to hit my 75lbs lost and would then like to hit 100lbs lost by May 4th (my one year). You may notice that I talk in how much I have lost and not what I weigh, I have future plans to disclose this information, just not today.
UPDATED FEBRUARY 2010:
Well I have hit 75 pounds lost and announced my weight here. I am still attending Weight Watchers meetings, but continue on my quest to eat clean and feed my soul rather than drop major poundage with “diet foods”. Working out is a continual struggle and Im really hoping that I can conquer this in the new year. My weight loss has definatly slowed down as I get closer to my goal weight of 160 (40 more pounds) but I feel happy with where Im at. Oh and to share my other boring stats:
HEIGHT: 5′ 7″
WEIGHT: 199
PANTS SIZE: 14/16
SHIRT SIZE: Medium/Large
BMI: 31.2
Mr. Gaunt is currently floating around 245 with a BMI of 29.8 (YAY NOT OBESE!) Down about 67 lbs in 10 months. He has taken up golf which he gets lots of walking exercise in. He would like to drop down to about 230 in the next few months.
UPDATE MARCH 2010
I have officially parted ways with Weight Watchers and am now focusing on Clean Eating / Organic Eating only. I have future plans to move this blog to a new site where the focus is health and not weight loss. My weight loss has stalled at 75lbs lost and I am happy with this. Although I still have about 40lbs to lose to get to my goal weight of 160, I will be letting this happen naturally with healthy foods and not dieting.
UDATE MAY 2011
After a good year of maintenance/plateau I am back in gear and working harder than ever to lose 40 pounds by my September wedding. I actually gained back around 30 pounds in the last 6 months, which was a wake up call. I have now added working out to my routine. I am starting with walking (fast) for at least an hour (usually 3+ miles) 6 days a week. I am also very slowly working in some at home strength training with some mini dumbbells. As for food I’m not really cooking much these days, and I’m trying to focus on eating for fuel instead of entertainment. This may not be the case forever, but it is working right now. I am 15 pounds away from my lowest weight, and 40 pounds away from losing 100 pounds!

Hey Morgan,
Your mom told me about your blog and finally checked it out!
You are looking good and you both look so happy. It was nice to get a glimps into your world.
The love of going grocery shopping may be hereditary. It is often where I go to relax. I may not have time to go shopping for myself but I can always get a deal at the grocery store. Do you have a Grocery outlet there. Some great deals if you do. Take care!
Aunt Jody
Hi Morgan,
I just came across your blog because a reader of mine found it from a post. Most of all, I appreciate you posting pictures of food and being so genuine about this passion. My own story is similar to yours, and now I am just so deep into learning and experiencing the power of healthy nutrition and lifestyle.
Being from King County, WA myself, you are still pretty close so I’ll add you to my feed and keep up with your progress!
Check me out at http://EllisonFitness.com

Hi! I am sooo inspired by your blogging. I just came across it and not only have I spent about an hour reading your entries, I am really impressed with your pics.
Speaking of pictures, I was wondering if you could tell me the type of camera you have? The quality is amazing.
Keep up the good work!! You’re amazing!!!
Thanks Aly!
I actually have a REALLY basic Sony Cybershot 7.2 point and shoot…you can see it here (and apparently its now only $99!) http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8828196
Ive spent months practicing the art of food photography, lighting is #1 important! and just getting all up and close with your food at good angles.
But Im so glad you like my blog, its my goal to help others, and show them that Im just a regular chubby girl who is making it happen! (=
That is officially on my Christmas list! Thank you!
A friend pointed me to your blog…..You have done a fantastic job and I’ve been looking at a lot of your past photos. I am also on the same path, however, I am fairly early in my journey….only 7 weeks in. My stats are very (VERY) similar to yours as well. I am happy to see it is possible.
Congratulations on your loss so far and I will be following and send encouragement from Seattle!
Ivie
Thanks Ivie (cute name by the way) Im glad you found my blog! I just took a quick peek at yours, and your food looks so good! Im excited to look over your menus and try some new stuff! Good luck with your journey, its so worth it!
Oh, your blog is just what I’ve been needing for weight-loss inspiration! I looked through your pictures and read a couple of your latest posts and I’m ready to join you! I love that you’ve moved from Weight Watchers to clean eating. I’ve done Weight Watchers twice and am ten pounds heavier now than the first time I started. Ugh. Anyway, you’re doing such a great job and making good food choices and I think you’re amazing. Love your beautiful pictures too. Keep up the good work!
Thank you! I loved WW, but now clean eating is my goal!

I think it’s fantastic that you guys are doing it together! It’s so important to have a support system.
Hello,
Thank you for sharing your journey, your progress and all your wonderful ideas. In constant battle to find peace with my own body and body image, I have come across many stories, many sites, spend more money that I want to think about and ate far too many calories to make it all go away-Your on going story is greatly motivating. Reading your posts makes me want to be a better person, a more healthy person, a kinder person, a greener person. I may not know you-but I’m proud of you. You have overcome amazing feats- Not like I need to say it-but- Keep it up. And thank you.
I have no idea how I came across your blog but I love it. I am also a flexitarian that loves eating vegetarian and sometimes vegan and I swear by Clean Eating.. funny how easy it is and how much common sense it is.. yet they still continue to sell cook book after cook book… anyway, I wanted to wish you luck in your healthy lifestyle and with your wedding.
Please keep up the healthy eating and cooking.. I have you bookmarked so I can nab your recipes!

You are such an inspiration! Thank you, thank you for sharing your story! I look forward to keeping up with you blog!
I do not even know what to say. You are definitely determined to lose weight and it also seems like you have a very practical, matter-of-fact attitude to this whole weight thing. I recently finished reading a book by Fatema Mernissi “Scheherazade Goes West” and it really changed or better, confirmed the way I feel about weight wars. It is also possible that I just like my food too much 😉
I just spent so much time perusing your blog. You are fantastic and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your journey. I don’t remember where I read it, but you wrote that you thought you should lose “weight” that you carry in your heart before you lose more weight from your body. I found reiki very helpful with this for me (I am a reiki healer now). My heart feels lighter and over time I naturally reached my ideal weight (which was not quite as skinny as I had hoped it would be!) I wanted to share that, in case you feel like approaching weight loss from another direction. Best of luck to you! And I love your succulents project 🙂
