Review: Ezekiel Bread

I’d like to repeat again, that change does not happen over night, and that health is a lifelong process. I am by no means a perfect eater, and I hope no one ever thinks I am. I’m not. I also have a few items I have yet to turn over to the Healthy Food Gods. One of these things was bread.  I have been using (for the last year) Sara Lee 45 Calorie Delightful Wheat Bread this is leftover from my Weight Watchers days where this bread rolled in at a mere 1 point for two slices! It’s hard to get better than that. Also its SUPER soft, which I love in a bread. I felt pretty bad about it, I means it’s a great bread, but it contains a few to many “un-clean” ingredients. Way more than 10 (they say you should avoid eating foods that have more than 10 ingredients, and any ingredients you can’t pronounce) so it had to go.

We were at Sunflower Market last week and found Ezekiel Bread. At first I was confused by the Holy Scripture, but then read this:

Inspired by the Holy Scripture verse Ezekiel 4:9., “Take also unto thee Wheat, and Barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and Spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it…”

We picked up the

Organic Sprouted 100% Whole Grain Flourless Bread

The ingredients are amazing too:

INGREDIENTS: Organic Sprouted Whole Wheat, Filtered Water, Organic Malted Barley, Organic Sprouted Whole Millet, Organic Sprouted Whole Barley, Organic Sprouted Whole Lentils, Organic Sprouted Whole Soybeans, Organic Sprouted Whole Spelt, Fresh Yeast, Sea Salt.

The nutritional information is even better than I thought it would be.

For one slice:

-80 Calories

-0.5 grams of fat

-3 grams of fiber

-4 grams of protein.

Not bad for something that is 100% clean, and Vegan.

So of course all of that is good, but how about taste? I was a little nervous because it’s not a soft bread. It’s very dense and…hearty.  To start off with Mr. Gaunt made me a grilled cheese and turkey sandwich on our George Foreman. It was actually really good! I was surprised. I’ve tried other healthy breads before and have always found them too sweet. I don’t like sweet breads, I think they are gross. This bread isn’t sweet at all, perfect bread flavor. Obviously when grilled its crispy, so the soft thing doesn’t make much of a difference.

Next we tried a regular old cold turkey sandwich. At first I thought, yup too dense and hard, not gonna like it, but the more I at it, the more I loved it. It has a nice nutty flavor, and its so filling. I just felt like I was eating good healthy filling foods. Not to mention I have recently found a love for Grey Poupon, and that is delicious on it!

So overall I am VERY pleased with this bread. We will be sticking with it, and I will try more recipes with it: French Toast, Bread Crumbs, egg sandwiches, etc. If you have tried it, Id love to hear your opinions too.

  1. I was raised on this bread (along with a 7-grain bread that is also sprouted and very similar) and although I always longed for white bread as a child and HATED the Ezekiel bread, I now LOVE it. You’re right about change! It took about 20 years for me to appreciate this bread. I do love soft white bread but really prefer this dense, hearty bread and appreciate the nutty flavor youo mentioned. I especially love it toasted with butter. I’m so glad you discovered it and like it too!

  2. I love Ezekiel bread. In Olympia, there are now several different varieties of ‘sprouted’ bread available. I found that I really enjoy this type of bread much more than the soft, brand name breads. I do try to vary my bread intake though by eating a lot of pita, naan, flatbread type of carbs. =)

  3. Yeah, that’s what real bread tastes like. Don’t be scared of food. Eat that shit up. Check the ingredients on your typical wheat bread at safeway and compare it to this. Almost all bread is complete BS and bad for you. If you’re going to eat bread, this is the only way to go. Also, try schwarzbrot. You should be able to buy it at most stores.

  4. I think O’m going to buy this bread soon. Its natural and organic. I’m trying to eat more healthier and this bread would be a good addition.

  5. I LOVE this bread!!!!!!!!!!!!! I only like it toasted though lol. The texture’s a little unusual to me when it’s not toasted. It’s also the most filling bread I’ve ever eaten and I don’t gain weight when I eat it. LOVE it!

  6. I love this bread. I am on a strict diet. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I have started a diet of unprocessed foods. I have lost over 35 pounds in the past year just by eating natural. Ezekiel bread has opened up my diet so much. The fact that it doesn’t have flour is amazing! I don’t feel like a pig after I eat it and it has made it possible for me to have sandwiches and toast in the morning. I also highly recommend the cinnamon raisin flavor! Great with cream cheese in the morning and the taste is amazing. The Ezekiel english muffins are so good. I think they taste better than the sliced bread. I feel like I am eating mini bagels. I have sliced them in half and made mini pizzas (natural ingredients of course) in the toaster oven. They are so good!

  7. I have just discovered Ezekiel bread YESTERDAY!! I was certain it was going to taste horrid, I bought the Cinnamon flavored with Raisins and it was AWESOME!!! I am never going back to regular bakery bread… plus I really want to shed a few extra pounds for my x’mas vacation to Island Roatan..

  8. I tried this bread back in my college days when candida was a common health issue for women. I am not on the Eat Right for Your Blood Type Diet – Type O and it is the only bread that is offered for our type. I am willing to try it again and hope with the new selection and and the great reviews I will like it.
